ROOT CANAL

How do you know if you need a root canal?

The only way to determine whether you need a root canal is to take an X-ray and talk to your dentist. However, if you have a single tooth that is consistently painful, especially when biting, you have a serious problem.

Signs that an infected (abscessed) tooth may need a root canal

  • Pain in one tooth whenever you chew or bite down
  • A tooth that is sensitive to hot or cold
  • A tooth that is dark or discolored
  • Swollen, tender gums around a painful tooth
  • A sore on the gums that doesn’t go away

Root canals: super-powered fillings

It usually takes two visits to complete a root canal. The first visit involves removing the diseased root and cleaning up the infection. Temporary fillings are used next to close up the tooth.

A second appointment will be scheduled after your tooth heals. X-rays will be taken to confirm that the infection has been completely eliminated, then the tooth will be permanently sealed.

Do root canals hurt?

As a result, they usually relieve the pain caused by the infection instantly.

The tooth and surrounding area are numb during the procedure, as we would for a cavity. Let your dentist know if you feel pain during a root canal or any other procedure.
